In this work a series of large mask-like portraits confront us from dark backgrounds. Produced as large-scale pigment prints, these images were created through the layering of multiple AI generated portraits. Echoing the process of machine-learning, which works from our composite collective image to evolve a new identity, these work combine multiple ‘false’ portraits within a single image; what emerges is a spectral presence - a distillation of AI’s unsettling strangeness.
The ‘Adversary’ of the title refers to a form of machine learning - the Generative Adversarial Network.
